The Royan Atlantique Agglomeration Community provides waste management for the 33 municipalities in the Royan Atlantique territory. The intercommunality ensures both the door-to-door collection as well as the contribution to the recycling center.
Door-to-door waste collection
Residents of the Royan Atlantique Urban Community (CARA) are equipped with two bins for household waste management:
- Un yellow lid bin, dedicated to recyclable waste (plastics, papers, cans, newspapers, advertisements, magazines, bricks, metal cans, non-toxic aerosols and all small aluminum)
- Un gray or green lidded bin, for the non-recoverable waste.
The plant waste They must be placed in "OK compost" paper bags or tied into bundles one meter long and 50 cm in diameter. These paper bags can be purchased in most supermarkets in the area, as well as in DIY stores and garden centers.
Waste collections take place every week according to an annual calendar for each of the municipalities in the territory.

On the territory, seven recycling centers welcome users for the deposit of waste such as:

- waste impossible to sort, non-recoverable (common and bulky)

Composting
Le composting is the process of transforming organic waste into compost under the action of micro-organisms in the presence of oxygen.
Since 1ster January 2024, the sorting bio-waste at source becomes obligatory for everyone. In order to meet this duty, CARA is launching a home equipment program starting this fall. Training on the implementation of composting will be provided in addition. Residents of the Urban Community already have the possibility of reserving their individual composter. For those who do not have a garden, collective composting sites may be offered. In an apartment, you can also opt for vermicomposting.

What is compost used for?
Comparable to potting soil, compost is a natural fertilizer for the soil. It enriches the soil and thus limits the use of water and fertilizer for the various plantations. In addition, by recycling our waste in this way, we reduce the quantity of household waste to be thrown in the trash and we are doing something for the planet!
What waste is concerned?
- The kitchen waste : peelings, egg shells, fruits and vegetables, coffee grounds, cheese rinds, etc.
- The green waste from the garden : leaves, wilted flowers, small branches, grass…
- Some household waste : small boxes (egg cartons, paper towels, etc.), tissues and paper filters, newspaper, ashes, etc.
How long does it take to have compost?
Good compost is obtained after approximately 6 months. To do this, it must be turned over and aired regularly, especially at the beginning, then every 1 to 2 months. You can tell he's ready when the waste is no longer recognizable and he smells like forest soil.
What is vermicomposting?
This is a above ground composting process very quickly (around 3 months) carried out by the worms. It does not require stirring. At the end, we get a highly concentrated liquid fertilizer to be diluted before use. In the worm composter, we mainly put fruit and vegetable peelings, egg shells, food paper and cardboard packaging cut into small pieces to feed the worms.
