About us

Former troglodyte hermitage, legendary founded by Saint-Martial but only seeming to date from the XNUMXth century. Enlarged in the XNUMXth century by an institution of Hermits to become a monolith. Great historical, religious and scientific interest.

Located 600 meters south of the lower town, the Saint-Martial hermitage is entirely laid out in the hollow of a mighty cliff. Of Cappadocian inspiration, it consists of several cells, a refectory, a kitchen and a curious monolithic church, which, although less known than those of Aubeterre-sur-Dronne and Saint-Émilion, is one of the summits of subtractive architecture in the South-West of France. Very sober, it retains a platform carved out of the rock, a statue of Saint Anthony of Egypt and another of Saint-Martial.

The visit is under the responsibility of the visitors.
