About us

La Coubre Lighthouse is located in the town of La Tremblade, at the northern end of the Gironde estuary, the largest in Europe.
This sentinel of the sea plays a fundamental role for maritime traffic in this turbulent part of the coast.

History of the Lighthouse:
1690: the existence of a fire beacon is reported on Pointe de La Coubre.
1860: lighting of the first wooden lighthouse.
1895: commissioning of the stone lighthouse built 1,5 km from the coast.
Ten years after its construction, marine erosion has done its work, a breakwater is being built to try to slow down the advance of the ocean, but the ocean is inexorably eating away at it.
1905: construction of the current concrete lighthouse located 1,8 km from the shore and commissioned on October 1, 1905.
On May 21, 1907, the stone lighthouse collapsed.

Characteristics of La Coubre Lighthouse:
Height: 64m
Number of steps: 300
Lamp power: 250 watts - Fresnel lens
Light range: 28 miles (52 km)

Visit :
After climbing 300 steps in a blue opaline interior, a 360° panorama offers a breathtaking view of the Côte Sauvage de La Tremblade and its magnificent beaches, the La Coubre forest, the Gironde estuary and the island of Oleron.
The visit continues at the foot of the lighthouse with a museum describing the history of this "giant of light" and the various materials necessary for its operation.
The "Grand Vent" exhibition hall located in the park of the lighthouse allows you to discover artists throughout the season.
Thanks to the lighthouse shop, visitors can buy a souvenir of this unforgettable moment.
From April to September, a foodtruck delights the greediest who also have the opportunity to picnic on site, facing the “Géant Trembladais”.
Take advantage of a free virtual escape game on the Coubre lighthouse website.
A webcam at the top of the lighthouse allows surfers, visitors and the curious to admire the view in real time from the top of the "Sentinel of Light".
