Phare de La Coubre

The La Coubre Lighthouse is located in La Tremblade, at the northern end of the Gironde Estuary. It is the tallest lighthouse in Charente-Maritime, with 300 steps and a height of 64 meters. It features opaline tiles, an Eiffel-style staircase, and overlooks the rugged coastline.

History of the Lighthouse:
1690: the existence of a fire beacon is reported on the Pointe de La Coubre
1860: lighting of the first wooden lighthouse
1895: commissioning of the stone lighthouse built 1,5 km from the coast

Ten years after its construction, marine erosion has done its work, a breakwater is built to try to slow down the advance of the ocean, but the ocean is inexorably eating away.
1905: construction of the current concrete lighthouse located 1,8 km from the shore and commissioned on October 1, 1905.
On May 21, 1907, the stone lighthouse collapsed.

Characteristics of La Coubre Lighthouse:
Height: 64 m
Number of steps: 300
Lamp power: 250 watts – Fresnel lens
Light range: 28 miles (52 km)

Visit :
After climbing 300 steps through an interior lined with blue opaline glass, a 360° panorama offers a breathtaking view of the Côte Sauvage and its magnificent beaches, the La Coubre forest, and the Gironde estuary. The visit continues at the foot of the lighthouse with a museum describing the history of this "giant of light" and the various equipment necessary for its operation.
Thanks to the lighthouse shop, visitors can treat themselves to a souvenir of this unforgettable moment.
An escape game, "The Lighthouse Keeper's Secret," is open year-round in his former home. Designed for all puzzle and adventure enthusiasts, this escape game invites participants to unravel the mysteries of the lighthouse keeper's last keeper. Locked inside his old house, you'll have 60 minutes to solve a series of puzzles and discover a well-kept secret. It's also a chance to explore a building that has remained untouched until now…
The “Grand Vent” exhibition room located in the lighthouse park allows you to discover artists throughout the season.
A webcam at the top of the lighthouse allows surfers, visitors and the curious to admire the view in real time from the top of the "Sentinel of Light".
