About us

The Maison des Douanes invites you to escape to the heart of an exceptional site in Saint Palais-sur-Mer. The Royan Atlantique Agglomeration Community wanted to dedicate this place to artistic creation and contemplation of the coast.

The Royan Atlantique Urban Community has transformed the former Customs House of Saint-Palais-sur-Mer, a listed coastal site dating from 1729, into a place dedicated to culture and the arts.

The wooded garden opens generously for a walk on the customs officers' path and the discovery of one of the most beautiful views of the coastline.
Free access to the garden and gazebo.

This year, the Customs House is hosting the unique exhibition “Jackie, America of the Kennedys” taken from the album by David Lawrence (Maison Templar Edition). A narrative story takes the public behind the scenes of a unique story and into the privacy of the Kennedys.

Through more than 100 photographs, personal objects of the Kennedys and documentaries, the exhibition is also an opportunity to discover another side of the personality of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis.

By marrying John F. Kennedy on September 12, 1953, Jackie will be the privileged witness to his rise, the 1007 days of his presidency, his assassination in Dallas on Friday, November 22, 1963 and his funeral.
If Jackie will refuse the writing of an autobiography, this exceptional album by David Lawrence, the fruit of 25 years of research, reveals a fragile, sensitive woman, hopelessly in love, determined to uphold the memory of her great love.
Aware of the emotional charge of the Kennedy legacy, Jackie will overcome each of the trials of her own existence with tact, avoiding the pitfalls of any sentimentalism.

Visitors will discover the Kennedys' passion for France, for the sea, "Salt also flows in our veins", behind the scenes of an ascent to the gates of the White House and the great History of America.

This exhibition will also show American society in the 1950s and 1960s, particularly through the civil rights movements, art and plastic, cinematographic and musical culture.
The production is signed by Maison Templar with the collaboration of the author, David Lawrence.
An exhibition organized by the Royan Atlantique Urban Community.
