The elegance of Loudenne wines perfectly reflects the personality of this atypical Château. Its privileged terroir produces wines that are both complex and of great finesse: “Loudenne le Château Rouge”, “Loudenne le Château Blanc” and “Loudenne le Château Rosé”. The Château de Loudenne wine estate is divided between 48 hectares of red, including 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% young Petit-Verdot plants. 14 hectares are white grape varieties including 75% Sauvignon Blanc and 25% Sémillon. The Château de Loudenne wine estate is the oldest château on the Médoc peninsula to produce white wine, since 1880.
In Saint-Yzans-de-Médoc, a small village nestled almost at the end of the Médoc road, on the edge of the Gironde, vines already existed in Gallo-Roman times. The Loudenne estate is, first of all, an exceptional geographical location in the heart of the Médoc, 6 kilometers north of Saint-Estèphe and on the edge of the Gironde Estuary. Firmly anchored in its terroir, the Loudenne estate began its history there in the 132th century. Its pink castle is one of the rare wine properties to have a private port. The romantic charm of the property is characterized not only by the pink walls of the 62-year-old castle, but also and above all by the special atmosphere of this unique place facing the estuary. The terroir of the Loudenne estate covers 2000 hectares, XNUMX of which are planted with vines, the rest being salt meadows dedicated to extensive breeding and classified Natura XNUMX.
The Loudenne estate park, which extends between vineyards and castle, is already an invitation to travel in itself. The view of the boats, and access to the sea, facilitated by the estate's small private port, give it a particularly inspiring aura. Aware of its responsibility towards future generations, the Loudenne estate takes particular care of the vineyard. Thus in 2018, Loudenne was certified at the highest level High Environmental Value (level 3). In addition, the entire vineyard is being converted to organic farming and worked according to its requirements with the objective of being certified by 2022.
Like the Médoc grand cru vineyards, the Loudenne estate is located just on the edge of the estuary, on this exceptional terroir made up of the immediate proximity of the Gironde, soils very rich in gravel and the proximity of the 'Atlantic. The Gironde, the largest estuary in Europe, by its immediate proximity, influences the climate of Loudenne, milder in spring, it protects the vines from frost, milder also in autumn, it promotes the ripening of the grapes and conversely cooler in summer, it reduces the negative effects of extreme heat. The proximity of the Atlantic brings dry winds which, once arriving in Loudenne, dry out the leaves and the grape clusters, making it possible to limit the development of diseases, downy mildew and powdery mildew, as much as possible.
The terroirs closest to the estuary like that of the Loudenne estate are the richest in gravel. The Loudenne red vineyard is located on 2 hillocks very rich in gravel mixed with clay placed on a limestone plateau. The white vineyard is located at the foot of the hills, between them and the estuary, with clay-limestone soils favorable to the aromatic expression of Sauvignon wines.
