On the heights of the estuary, between vines and light, a day like no other awaits those who want to experience the grape harvest in the heart of the Royan Atlantic VineyardsA day to observe, learn, harvest, taste, and above all, feel. Several local estates open their doors to the general public for a harvest workshop.

Experience a day of harvesting

Here, there is no artificial setting. We dive directly into the reality of a working vineyardThe rows of vines stretch as far as the eye can see, bathed in light and caressed by the morning breeze. The vines are there, on the hillsides of the Gironde, still bathed in sunshine, ready to deliver their grapes. The winemaker welcomes us early in the morning. At his side, members of the wine tourism team from the Community Tourist Office guide our first steps. A welcome breakfast allows for a first moment of exchange between participants. And then, we are distributed the pruning shears and the crates, and very quickly, we slip into the rows.

Experience to live

A day of harvesting in the heart of the Royan Atlantique Vineyards

Harvesting by hand

The harvest begins. Each bunch is cut by hand, with care. We listen to the advice: don't crush the berries, look for damaged grains. The baskets fill up.

We smell the scent of ripe grapes, the leaves still damp from the morning dew.

There's no point comparing ourselves to the seasonal workers who do this all day, for weeks on end. The effort is there, but so is the real satisfaction. We see the fruits of our labor. Quickly, our movements become more confident. We laugh, we share, we help each other, and we empty the buckets into the crates that the winemaker comes to collect with his small tracked tractor. We understand what "harvesting by hand" really means.

From the vine to the vats

After a good hour, everyone gathers together to follow the grapes to the cellarThis is where the second part of the workshop begins: understanding the path from grape to bottle. In the main building, we are shown the facilities: the press, the vats, the barrels. We observe the process: reception of the harvest, destemming, crushing, pressing in a large pneumatic press. Each step is important. Wine is not only born from the earth. It also comes from time and know-how. Then, the winemaker lets us taste the must, sweet and fruity, a direct result of our morning's harvest. He tells us about the grape varieties, the climate, the soil... We then discover the differences between the red, white and rosé Charente wines.

The harvesters' meal

It's almost noon. The morning ends with a moment of conviviality. On a large table set in the shade of the trees, the harvesters' meal is ready. Facing the estuary, everyone takes their seats, a glass of wine in hand. Conversations resume around a simple and generous dish. We toast. The wine served at the table is that of the estate. We taste it differently, with a new awareness. Behind each sip, there is a bunch, a gesture, a day's work. The meal transforms into a moment of discussion between participants, with the members of the team and the winemaker. We tell each other how we experienced the morning. We share our impressions.

Wine-related events in Royan Atlantique

This workshop is an immersion experience. A direct, sincere way to enter the region's wine-growing world.

Ready to leave, the afternoon well underway, we take a last look at the vines. They continue to vibrate in the sunshine. The work doesn't stop. Nature, however, follows its course. The scent of grapes lingers on our hands. With the feeling of having, for a moment, been part of the estate.

An experience to share

The Tourist Office designed these days to promote the work of passionate winegrowers, to discover the wine-growing landscapes, but also to create connections. We don't just come to learn, we come to feel. In a world where everything moves fast, where we consume without always understanding, this experience is good. It reminds us that wine is first and foremost a story of patience, effort, and a relationship with nature. It shows that behind each bottle, there are hands, faces, and stories.

Upcoming meetings
