Sentier Détours N°2 – Médis

Our towns and villages conceal many treasures... which are often ignored or avoided, hidden alongside the routes we take, far from the "direct" routes.

Autumn, Summer, Winter, Spring

This walk allows you to discover the western sector of the town of Médis, from Place Charles de Gaulle to the wooded areas. Near the starting point, the historical heritage is profiled with the "old cross", later the architecture takes shape with the Charente residences, the bourgeois dwellings. Finally, depending on the season, a flora rich in wild plants can be discerned in the undergrowth: an ideal visit for nature lovers.

Detour Trail N°2 – Médis

Distance: 4,3 km

Step 1: DEPARTURE

Place Charles de Gaulle.

Step 2: The Old Cross

Reported in an act of 1573, this monument was a cross erected on an ancient path bordering the territories protected during the Pax Dei (peace of God), after the Hundred Years' War.

Step 3: The domain of Elies

Via rue de la Motte, reach the estate. It includes several buildings resulting from several construction campaigns.

Step 4: Leuse wood

After walking along the hedge, cross through the woods and rue du Vieux Chemin. The broom (or “grigon” as we say here) grows generously there. This plant with its toxic berries was once used to make a makeshift broom or a chimney sweep hedgehog.

Step 5: The Rigaudière estate

The Rigaudière estate, built in the 1996th century for André Alexandre Froger de la Rigaudière, on the site of a previous estate. It consists of a dwelling organized on two levels, between two wings of outbuildings and framing a large courtyard, with a balustered terrace. The interior of the castle retains several monumental fireplaces from the XNUMXth century as well as Louis XV period woodwork. At the rear of the castle, the gardens are listed in the pre-inventory of remarkable gardens. The entire estate was classified as a Historic Monument in XNUMX.

Step 6: Cormiers woods

The corm tree (or domestic mountain ash), although it gives its name to this wood, is increasingly rare here.
Be careful of traffic along the Route de la Gare which is a departmental road.

Step 7: The Clouzit

The Saintongeais word “clouzit” designates an enclosed place, often a cemetery, surrounding a church (as in Royan). Here, these are Charentaise houses around a quereu (courtyard common to several homes such as farms).

Step 8: La Motte-Médis

The current dwellings undoubtedly replace an old home.
