Sentier Détours N°1 – Saint-Georges-de-Didonne

Our towns and villages conceal many treasures... which are often ignored or avoided, hidden alongside the routes we take, far from the "direct" routes.

This walk allows you to discover the city centre, the seafront, the cornice and the superb views offered by Saint-Georges-de-Didonne. The discovery of a culturally and naturally rich heritage will be done at the pace of the steps: Protestant temples, sumptuous "Belle Époque" villas, the port, the lighthouse of Vallières and the heart of the city, witness to the medieval era of neo-gothic style.

Detour Trail N°1 – Saint-Georges-de-Didonne

Distance: 4,6 km

Step 1: DEPARTURE

From the Tourist Information Office, take Rue de la République to Avenue Edmond Mocqueris.

Step 2: The Protestant temple

It is the only testimony in the commune of modernist architecture after the bombing of the Royan pocket. Its original shape evokes a pine cone.

Step 3: The Grande Conche and its seafront

On the south side, nature is preserved with, at the end of the beach, the Suzac cliff. Head towards the more urban part, on the north side, to follow the seafront and its “Belle Époque” villas.

Step 4: The nautical base

It's time to leave the beach. Here, it’s Saint-Georges sails! At random, you can see windsurfing boards, sand yachts, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, catamarans or even water walking. Take the Charles Martel promenade.

Step 5: The port

Walk along the rocky bench of La Béchade. It leads to the small beaching port which lives to the rhythm of the tides. It bears witness to the presence of boat pilots who guided the sailors in the estuary.

Step 6: The lighthouse

The “pilots’ lighthouse” was classified as a Historic Monument in 2012. You have to climb 144 steps to enjoy its 36 m height. The impacts on its northern facade recall the battles during the liberation of the Royan pocket in 1945.

Step 7: Seagull Island

At low tide, the rocks of the foreshore reveal shellfish and crustaceans. But... Stop! Further along the cornice is Royan. Then return to the city center via rue de la Crète, guided by the neo-Romanesque bell tower of the church.
