Sentier Détours N°1 – Cozes

Our towns and villages conceal many treasures... which are often ignored or avoided, hidden alongside the routes we take, far from the "direct" routes.

Autumn, Summer, Winter, Spring

Departing from the Tourist Information Office located in the public garden and its alley of plane trees more than a hundred years old, you will go up the rue de l'hôtel de ville in the direction of the old Halles, listed in the inventory of Historic Monuments since 1938, where The biggest Cohue (fair) of Saintonge used to be held.

The name comes from an old Celtic word "Koz" which means old.
Inhabited since prehistoric times, this village has experienced religious wars, revolts and the arbitrary decisions of Louis XIV. The Protestants, predominant, were persecuted, then finally knew peace. In the Middle Ages, the city was an essential passage for the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. These experiences marked the city, which is very attached to its traditions.
