Thanks to video mapping projected onto its facades, the sound and light show reveals the origins of the site, its evolution through the centuries, and the influence of Romanesque art in Saintonge.

Between cultural outing, heritage discovery and nighttime show, this unmissable event invites you to see the abbey differently, through a visual and sound narrative accessible to all.

The abbey: an iconic heritage monument in Saintonge

In the heart of Saintonge, near Royan Abbey of Sablonceaux is one of the major heritage sites of Charente-Maritime. Founded in 1136 by Geoffroy de Lauroux thanks to the donation of Duke William X of Aquitaine, it is permanently part of the religious and cultural history of the Royan region.

From the 20th century onwards, major restoration work saved the church and the remaining buildings. Now owned by the Diocese of La Rochelle and Saintes, the abbey is run by the Chemin Neuf Community. It has thus regained a spiritual, cultural and hospitality vocation, while offering visitors a remarkable architectural ensemble.

Classified as a Historical Monument, the abbey of Sablonceaux It's a veritable open-air history book. Its medieval architecture and spaces bear witness to the major periods that have shaped the region, from the Hundred Years' War to the French Revolution. For several seasons, the Sablonceaux Abbey has hosted a sound and light showThis video mapping highlights its history and evolution through the centuries.

For approximately 30 minutes, its facades become the support for a monumental projection blending images, music and narrationThe public then witnesses an immersive reinterpretation of the major stages that have shaped the site: periods of prosperity, destruction linked to conflicts, phases of reconstruction and rebirth.

Ce night show This allows visitors to rediscover the abbey from a sensitive and educational perspective. It reveals its architectural transformations and the role it played in the history of the region.

“Romanesque Saintonge in the spotlight”: The new 2026 mapping

For the 2026 edition, the show is taking a fresh approach! It offers a journey to the origins of the region, through Christianization and...the rise of Romanesque art in Saintonge.

The story now opens with the formation of the medieval landscape and the structuring role of religious communities in the organization of villages and the countryside. As Christianity spread, numerous buildings were erected, permanently shaping the local cultural identity.

The show also highlights theinfluence of major monastic movementsThe Cluny Abbey, in particular, contributes to the spiritual and artistic influence of the region. The Abbey of Saint-Étienne de Vaux is also part of this network and exemplifies this dynamic.

A significant amount of time is also devoted to theRomanesque art of Saintonge, renowned for the richness of its churches and the finesse of their sculpted decorations. This heritage constitutes today one of the major markers of the identity of Charente-Maritime.

Finally, the Sablonceaux Abbey, the anchor point of the narrative, appears as a synthesis of this story. Through its architecture, its evolution, and its vocation, it fully embodies the encounter between spirituality, artistic creation, and territory.
