With more than 270 km of cycling routes and 350 km of mountain bike trails, Royan Atlantique is certainly a land for mountain bike lovers!
On a bike, you take your time. Everyone has their own pace to enjoy the natural landscapes in a different way. The territory is a real playground for lovers of cycling tours and followers of “slow tourism”. You can first walk along the coast between sea and forest by taking the cycle paths. Then, do not miss to criss-cross the small country roads. A palette of varied and colorful landscapes is revealed, between rivers and hillsides. On the one hand, athletes will find bike tours and mountain bike trails up to their expectations. On the other hand, families will opt for easier loops.
Routes and bike rides
During your holidays in Royan or for a walk, the bike is the ideal mode of transport to explore the territory. In total, 10 major cycle routes for practice road bike or VTC are offered. From these, bike tours of a few hours up to three days are possible. This allows you to discover all the diversity of our landscapes. Something to give you ideas!
The Vélodyssée®, more than 1200 km freewheeling along the Atlantic
La Vélodyssée® starts in Brittany to the Basque coast on the French part of Eurovéloroute n°1 (from Norway to Portugal). The circuit belonging to our territory runs along the coast for 45 km between the Seudre bridge in the town of La Tremblade Ronce-les-Bains and the ferry pier Royan – Le Verdon-sur-Mer at the mouth of the Gironde estuary.
The section from Ronce-les-Bains to La Palmyre gives pride of place to nature. It crosses the forest of La Coubre and runs along the Côte Sauvage on an entirely and exclusively cycle track – ideal for families – which leads to the various beaches and the lighthouse of La Coubre.
The more urban part of the Vélodyssée® from Saint-Palais-sur-Mer to Royan opens up to everyone like a catalog of villas from all eras. Along the way, you will discover blockhouses, vestiges of the Atlantic Wall, squares and the famous legendary rocks: the Puits de l'Auture and the Pont du Diable.
The Canal des 2 Mers® by bike from Royan to Mortagne-sur-Gironde
750 km long, the 2 Seas Canal® by bike connects the Atlantic coast to the Mediterranean coast. We cycle along the Gironde estuary then the Garonne canal. On the Royan area, the route starts from the ferry pier in Royan to the south of Mortagne-sur-Gironde. It is a 47 km cycle route.
From the villas of the seaside resort to the marshes of the Gironde estuary, the landscapes follow one another and are renewed between vineyards and cliffs. Halfway, we dismount for an unmissable stop: a walk in Talmont-sur-Gironde. The further south you go, the steeper the relief. The Beaumont tower signals the end of the territory.
The Seudre paths between La Tremblade and Mornac-sur-Seudre
This 30 km cycle route between Mornac-sur-Seudre, "Most Beautiful Village in France", and La Tremblade guides you through the meanders of oyster marsh. This route of shared lanes winds through a mosaic of water mirrors and runs along the channels to the edge of the smallest estuary in France.
Between Chaillevette and Étaules, the Butte de Beauregard is the highest point of this circuit. With a reading table, it offers the only real point of view in height on the Seudre. And for cyclists who want to continue the ride, the Seudre bridge allows you to reach Marennes and continue the Seudre paths on the other bank.
