Conférence ARCHI – L’architecture des musées au XXe siècle
Thursday May 21 at 18:30 p.m.
Salle Jean Gabin 112 rue Gambetta 17200 Royan
By Simon Texier, professor of contemporary art history
at the University of Picardy
The number of museums in the world increased from 1,000 to 10,000 between 1870 and 1960, and then from 10,000 to 80,000 in just five decades (1960-2010). A recent development in the history of architecture – it only appeared at the end of the 18th century – the museum has established itself as one of the consubstantial, even indispensable, attributes of the city. We will discuss the major stages which, in the 20th century, made it one of the most fertile places of invention, but also one of the most revealing of our contemporary condition.
