The 70th anniversary of Royan's Central Market is the perfect opportunity to explore the pleasures of fine food: market scenes, austere or sumptuous still lifes, peasant and princely banquets, and festive celebrations. Many painters—some of the greatest—have depicted these scenes, each in their own, sometimes unexpected, way. This lecture will offer a broad overview, from the Middle Ages to the beginning of the 20th century.
